What Is Induced Menopause?
A Sudden Shift That Deserves a Spotlight
By Ingrid Dodd, Co-Host of the Rebranding Menopause Podcast
Even those of us who feel empowered by aging aren't exactly rushing toward menopause...
Especially when it arrives unexpectedly. For many women, menopause doesn't come with a slow fade but instead crashes in overnight, thanks to surgery or medical treatment. It's called induced menopause, and it can shake you to your core.
As one of the hosts of the Rebranding Menopause Podcast, I've spoken with countless women going through this very experience — and the truth is, it's not talked about nearly enough.
So… What Exactly Is Induced Menopause?
Induced menopause is when your hormone levels drop suddenly because of a medical intervention — not time. This can be the result of:
- Surgical procedures, like removal of ovaries or the uterus
- Medical treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone-blocking meds
Unlike natural menopause, which unfolds over years, this shift can happen within days or even hours.
Why It Hits Harder Than You'd Think
Natural menopause is like a slow sunset. Induced menopause is a blackout.
The symptoms come fast and furious:
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Mood swings and anxiety
- Sleep disruptions
- Low libido
- Vaginal dryness
- Brain fog
And because it often follows a serious health issue or surgery, it carries a heavy emotional load too.
Is It Permanent?
That depends.
- Surgical menopause (removal of ovaries) is typically permanent.
- Medical menopause (from treatments or meds) may reverse over time.
But even if it's temporary, the symptoms are real and intense — and they need real support.
What Can Help?
Relief is possible. Some of the tools women are turning to include:
- HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) – Powerful, but not for everyone
- Non-hormonal meds – For hot flashes, mood, sleep, or bone health
- Alternative therapies – Acupuncture, herbal supplements, adaptogens
- CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) – For managing mood and sleep issues
- Lifestyle adjustments – Reducing caffeine, sugar, and alcohol can do wonders
It's all about finding what works for you. And no — it doesn't have to be one-size-fits-all.
Why We Talk About It
The emotional side of induced menopause is often overlooked — but it's real. One minute you're recovering from surgery, the next you're in a hormonal tailspin. The shift is sudden, shocking, and rarely understood by others.
That's why Rebranding Menopause exists — to bring these conversations into the light. If you're experiencing induced menopause, know this: you're not alone, and your experience is valid.
We're here for the unfiltered truths, the shared stories, and the superpowers we uncover along the way.
